There are record lows in unemployment, a shortage of skilled candidates in sectors such as IT, Construction and Healthcare, as well as an increased demand for permanent staff form employers. Make no mistake, in many industries, it’s a candidate-driven market.

With a diminishing pool of suitable candidates and a more competitive marketplace, how do recruiters ensure that they fill their roles with the best candidates?

We’ve put together three points we think are important for ensuring recruiters and employers reach top talent in a crowded marketplace.

SEO

Search engine optimisation should be standard practice for any serious recruiter at this point, but it’s still surprising how many unoptimised job postings there are. The problem is basic: if candidates can’t find your job posting in a search, they can’t apply.

SEO can be time-consuming, but the results are worthwhile

The introduction of Google for Jobs has been a double edge sword, as SEO has been made a tad more difficult by the separate criteria Google uses to populate its listings. However, it has also been a great opportunity for companies to increase their rankings with the right technical know-how.

Any recruiter looking to stay competitive needs to make sure their SEO strategy is up-to-date, to ensure they get the most exposure to candidates actively looking for new roles.

PPC Advertising

An effective PPC campaign can work wonders for your application rates. Essentially, a well-researched and thought out PPC campaign can target relevant candidates, and attract them to your job posting. Again, this is something every recruiter should be doing, but many in the industry overlook this.

PPC advertising is a great way to hook potential talent in and tempt them with your posting. Due to its targeted nature, it ensures you only get the most relevant candidates and is available on a variety of popular platforms, such as Google, LinkedIn & Facebook.

PPC is great for targeting suitable candidates

The best thing about PPC advertising is you can plan out your costings beforehand, and at a lower cost than advertising on a jobs board. As you are charged per click, you can ensure that you only spend as much as you want. You also have complete control over when the postings go out, essentially giving your site traffic on tap.

Innovation

Whilst the two previous points are a case of recruiters doing the basics well, this point is a bit more intangible. In order to stand out in a crowded marketplace, you need to differentiate your offering from others and position yourself as an innovative employer to prospective candidates.

One way we’ve done this at Enhance Media is with HireCast interactive video. By using a video job description, with a wealth of interactive features, we’ve managed to fit a microsite of information into a short, interesting video. This has allowed our clients to create a point of interest around their job postings, as well as the added bonus of being a great employer branding exercise.

If you can do something to set you apart from the competition and create a point of interest to candidates, you can ensure your posting will generate more traffic than your competition.
