3 Ways to Improve Your Candidate Attraction Strategy

At Enhance Media, we are big advocates of using research and analytics to inform recruitment strategy. If you have a position to fill and know exactly what will motivate your ideal candidates and where to advertise for them, that’s half the battle already won.

With this in mind, we thought we would take some time to discuss what factors convince candidates to choose an employer, and how best to appeal to these motives.

Research by the Korn Ferry Institute shows that employees have a host of reasons

for leaving their current position, the top four being;

‘Being bored and needing a new challenge’ – 33%

‘Culture not fitting me or my values’ – 24%

‘I have either lost my job or expect that I will’ – 21%

‘Needing a higher salary’ – 19%

What does this tell us about candidates today? Well, although higher salaries and needing to pay bills are still a large motivating factor, candidates seem to be more enthused by roles that challenge and excite them. They’re attracted to positive working cultures and environments.

This means the next question is, how do you demonstrate to your candidates that your role is exciting and dynamic, and that you can offer a great working environment? Unlike salaries, these are more intangible factors that can’t easily be communicated effectively over a traditional job description.

1. An Authentic Social Media Presence

Having an active social media presence will massively help your attraction strategy

One of the best ways to let candidates know what an exciting and dynamic workplace your company is, is through social media. Now although everyone knows that every company should have a presence on social media, it’s how you use it that matters.

If you want to appeal to potential candidates, you should give candidates a real feel for the kind of working environment you have. This could include posting about big projects you are completing, training or qualifications staff have attained, or just nice events such as charity bake-offs and other extra-circular activities.

Any good candidate is going to do thorough research on your company, and a big part of that will be your company’s social media pages. It’s an easy win to make these as palatable to candidates as possible.

2. Video Job Descriptions

Video job descriptions are a great way of showing potential candidates your working environment, as well as adding authenticity to your posting. Using video you can show applicants your place of business, interview employees and demonstrate the kind of work they can expect to be doing.

Video Job Descriptions are an excellent way generating candidate interest

This can give candidates a great feel for your role, as you are able to show them all aspects of the job. It can also work as a great window into your business, and if done right, can work as an excellent piece of company branding as well.

Interviews with motivated and passionate staff, panoramic shots of great working environments and demonstrating the perks of your role will give your postings an authenticity that is lacking from traditional text-based job descriptions. In turn, this will lead to more applicants from enthused and excited candidates.

3. A Candidate Focused Careers Site

Whilst your careers site should already be the hub of your digital marketing strategy, many just use it as a place to host job descriptions and to gather information for their ATS. Yet a career site designed and focused on attracting and converting the best talent can pay its owner dividends.

Utilising features such as case study pages, video, and regular blog posts on exciting new projects or developments in your company give applicants plenty of detail on your working culture and really give candidates a sense of what it’s like to work at your company.

Your careers site should be the centrepiece of your digital strategy

As well as improving the perception of your employer brand, giving candidates more information on your working environment and the work they can expect to do will inexorably lead to more applications for more enthusiastic and motivated candidates.
