Well what can we say? Our crystal ball was obviously fully operational when we wrote about Google dabbling in the recruitment marketplace, with the upcoming launch of Google Hire last month. The launch of Google for Jobs in the US, is in line with their mission to steer people to the information they need in their daily lives. Google for Jobs is launching via the Google App, desktop and mobile web. Could this be set to cause waves in the recruitment market in the US?
Why should we be interested in Google’s latest offering?
It could be said that Google for jobs is essentially another job searching tool, however, this is where it differs, it uses artificial intelligence and Google’s Cloud Jobs API to better understand how jobs are classified and related, along with other things. It will allow users to search from entry level positions to high level professional positions. To get the best and most up to date jobs information Google has partnered with, rather than competing with, LinkedIn, Monster, DirectEmployers, CareerBuilder, WayUp, Glassdoor, and Facebook, with more coming soon.
Google are excited about their latest product
Google for Jobs is easy to access
All you need to do is what you would normally do to search for jobs, enter into Google a term such as ‘jobs near me’ and you’ll bring up the Google for Jobs interface. Anything that Google deems to be a job seeking search will direct you to targeted job filtering. Job seekers can activate an email alert to let them know when new positions are available in their area.
What features will you find when job searching through Google?
- A familiar search interface, most of us are familiar with Google and how it works
- Reviews and ratings of the employer
- Use of Google Maps if you search jobs near me – showing useful information such as commute time
- Multiple filters including – location, title, category or type, date posted or whether it’s full or part-time.
- Up to date vacancies supported by some of the top aggregators.
What does this mean for us in the UK?
As Google for Jobs is yet to launch in the UK, it doesn’t mean a lot at the present time, although Google do plan to launch in other countries over the coming year. It will be interesting to see how the US market takes to a new kid on the block, even though Google have partnered with some of the big players in recruitment, it is bound to unsettle the market. Bearing in mind some of the other areas that Google have dabbled in, such as travel, it may well be striking fear into the hearts of some of their potential competitors.
