The UK online recruitment industry will be ten years old in 2005. Though the exact birth date of the industry is hard to nail down, there's no doubt that 2005 will be a significant year in its development. Jobserve was founded by Robbie Cowling in 1993, started a jobs by email service in 1994 and launched a recruitment website in 1995. Jobsite was also launched in 1995. Elsewhere Jeff Taylor had founded Monster in the US in 1994 and Stepstone began life in Norway in 1996.
The industry has changed a lot in the last ten years. In 1995 less than 6% of the UK adult population had used the internet in the last 12 months, now the equivalent figure is 58% - representing 27 million UK adults (NOP World). The internet has grown from a specialist to a mainstream medium and online job seeking has grown with it. Workthing's 2003 E-Recruitment Study showed that over 11 million UK adults had used the internet to look for a job in the last 12 months.
Despite these advances not all employers are taking advantage of the benefits that the internet has to offer as a recruitment tool. And contrary to predictions made by some analysts regarding offline recruitment, both recruitment consultancies and the recruitment sections of newspapers and magazines are still going strong. Questions also hang over the industry in the form of the Employment Agencies Act and the classification of job boards as recruitment consultancies in the eyes of the goverment.
So what will the future hold for the online recruitment industry? How will technology and UK internet use develop? What will be the legal challenges of tomorrow and how will we tackle them? What business models with job boards be using in 2015? And what will the answers to all of these questions mean for you, your business and your online recruitment strategy?
Our half-day workshop 'Online Recruitment - the next ten years' will look at these questions and although we can't guarantee that we'll be able to provide you with all the answers we are sure that the workshop will be a great opportunity to take on board and debate thought leading commentary and advice with your peers.
In addition to the Enhance Media team the workshop will include guest speakers, including Graham Hann from Taylor Wessing. Graham specialises in information technology and media law with a particular focus on the legal aspects of the internet, including privacy and data protection, laws relating to online sales, intellectual property rights, marketing and other regulations and has advised a number of businesses within the recruitment sector. Graham has also previously offered advice on the legal aspects of direct online marketing through our newsletter.
